School administrators getting four percent raises July 1

Most teachers only getting 3.65 percent raises

Salaries for King George school administrators will go up 4 percent, effective this week on July 1 with the start of the 2008-09 fiscal year.

But most teachers will only get 3.65 percent increases at the start of the new school year this fall.

The School Board had voted to approve 4 percent increases “for all employees” for the 2008-09 fiscal year at a meeting on May 7.

Superintendent Candace Brown clarified to The Journal that the raises for teachers will “average out” to 4 percent because several teachers will get more than 4 percent.

Brown said the teachers who will get more are those eligible to receive a supplement of $2,520 for a Master’s degree.

Brown said the reasoning is that only teachers are eligible for supplements.

That is not accurate, as seven administrators noted below are getting supplements on top of their straight 4 percent salary increases.

o TWO ADMINISTRATORS GET BIGGER INCREASES Brown also told The Journal that two other administrators are getting bigger raises than the 4 percent increases approved by the School Board.

Financial Administrative Assistant Annette Thompson’s $6,608 raise gives her 12.9 percent more than last year, which includes a supplement of $500.

King George High School Athletic Director John Spiak’s $5,000 raise is 9.8 percent more than his salary in 2007-08. The salaries are in the list below.

Brown said increases for Thompson and Spiak were in the 2008-09 budget that the School Board voted to approve on May 14.

o BROWN Brown is the highest paid employee in the division, with her salary going from $123,357 to $128,292.

Brown also gets $10,000 per year paid into a tax-sheltered annuity or deferred compensation plan and a car allowance of $7,000 per year.

Brown’s contract runs until June 30, 2012. A contract extension was approved at the last meeting of the calendar year on December 12, 2007.

That was the final meeting with two lame-duck School Board members, Rose Marie Ball and John Davis, prior to their elected replacements, Renee Parker and Dennis Paulsen, taking office.

The 4 percent raises are slightly more than school employees got last year, when 3.9 percent raises were given to all employee groups, except bus drivers who got raises averaging 6 percent based on an adjusted salary scale.

The salary increases are part of the $3.5M increase from all revenue sources granted in the School Board’s operating budget of $35,191,245.

A sizeable portion of the $3.5M increase in the School Board budget comes from county taxpayers, who are contributing $1.5M more to hike the local effort to $12,373,371, which equates to an increase of just under 14 percent.

The total division budget is $41,197,705, which includes $1,265,320 for Food Service and $4,741,140 for debt service to pay back loans for school construction.
